ELECTION UPDATE

The last day to register to vote in this election is Tuesday October 9, 2018. If you are already registered you do not need to register again. If you are new to BHV, contact Ann Arbor Township to learn about voter registration/transfer. Complete voter information is available from Ann Arbor Township online at aatwp.org, or by phone 734-663-3418.
Along with county and state offices and proposals, BHV residents will vote for candidates to fill four open seats on the BHV Board of Trustees. Six candidates will be listed on the ballot:
Linda Benson (incumbent), Robert Hensinger, Cheryl MacKrell (incumbent), J. Michael Richards, Gregory Saldana and Matt Turner.
A special edition of the Barton Bulletin providing information on the candidates will be distributed later this week.
ESCH HALL DEDICATION/FALL PICNIC Many thanks to all who contributed to the wonderful success of the September 16 Esch Hall Dedication and Fall Picnic! A record number of 88 residents (including 17 kids and 6 alumni) were joined by 22 members of the Esch family, 10 BHV staff and 3 Ann Arbor Township Fire Department personnel to fill the Village Green area on the sunny, breezy day. The bronze plaque proclaiming Walter Esch Village Hall was unveiled by BHV Board members who shared a few memories about Walter. Folks could then view the display inside while munching delicious cookies provided by the Esch family, join the Ann Arbor Township Fire Department personnel for a fire safety talk, or dive right into the impressive feast of picnic food. There was plenty of exploring the giant AATFD ladder truck and the historic BHV fire truck, meeting new neighbors, and lively conversation, all of which added up to a very memorable event.

HALLOWEEN Flyers were recently distributed with information about the Halloween Trolley Ride and Pizza Party being held on Wednesday October 31. Reservations are first come first served for the Trolley ride and home stops so contact Jan Esch (734-222-5209; bhvclerk@bartonhillsvillage.org) ASAP to sign up. The Pizza Party begins at 5:30 PM at Walter Esch Hall and the Trolley departs at 6:15 PM sharp.
There is no need to contact Jan if you do not want to participate. Due to the lack of sidewalks and lighting for safety, trick-or-treating is not allowed in Barton Hills Village other than the Trolley ride.
ORDINANCE ADOPTION At their September 10, 2018 meeting the BHV Board of Trustees adopted Ordinance No. 55 to amend Barton Hills Village Code Chapter 5 (Special Assessments). Section 1.53 was amended to match the language of the Charter Amendment approved by BHV voters on August 7, 2018. Full text of the ordinance is available from the BHV Clerk’s office.
ANNUAL WATER METER READING In preparation for the annual water usage billing, BHV staff member Dave Esch will be stopping by homes to read the water meter during the month of October. If you have questions or concerns please contact Jan Esch (734-222-5209; bhvclerk@bartonhillsvillage.org).
FALL CLEAN UP BHV staff will vacuum up leaves for homeowners who rake their own. Lawn service providers are expected to haul away whatever debris they gather. Please do not bag leaves for pick up. Separate out sticks, rocks and brush that clog up the leaf vacuum and leave them in piles near (but not in) the driveway or roadway where the staff can pick them up as time permits. Consider mulching leaves to provide nutrients for the lawn, and removing leaves from catch basins. Leaf pick up will not occur on trash collection days.
ROAD SAFETY The Southeast Michigan Council of Governments reminds all cyclists, pedestrians and drivers to be especially mindful of safety as darkness arrives earlier. Use lights and reflective clothing when biking or walking, and be attentive to others using the roads. For more helpful tips, go online to WalkBikeDriveSafe.org. Safety is everyone’s responsibility.
