THINK SPRING PLANTING     BHV continues to encourage wise use of our water resources.  When thinking about landscape plans and water sprinkler usage, a simple step to conserve water is to select drought-tolerant plants.  Many of these thrifty plants use less water, while providing beauty and function in the landscape.  The Washtenaw County Water Resources Commission has a wealth of information available on their website at washtenaw.org/154/water-resource  (contact Susan Bryan, byrans@washtenaw.org, 734-222-6860).   The Native Plant Expo and Marketplace, being held on Saturday, May 30, 2020 at the Washtenaw Farm Council Grounds, offers a great opportunity to learn about and shop for Michigan native plants.  Contact the Washtenaw County Conservation District for details, including pre-order options (due by April 17), at their website washtenawcd.org (contact Megan DeLeeuw, megan.deleeuw@macd.org,  734-205-1219).   For more ideas, check out this article from Michigan State University on drought-tolerant plants:

ROAD CONSTRUCTION NOTE     The Washtenaw County Road Commission is beginning work on the new roundabout at the intersection of Miller and Wagner Roads.  Tree removal will cause traffic delays the week of February 24-28; Miller Road will be closed between Wagner and E. Delhi Roads the week of March 2 for tree work and other preparations.

SECURITY REMINDER     Remember to keep vehicles parked in the driveway, and garages, locked to avoid opportunities for theft.  Motion sensor lighting is helpful, along with picking up mail, newspapers and packages promptly.

SPEED LIMIT     With warmer weather comes increased use of the BHV roadways by pedestrians, cyclists, dog-walkers, and landscape companies.  Please adhere to the 25 mph speed limit on all BHV roads and use extra caution on the winding curves and hills.

ECOLOGICAL BURN     The City of Ann Arbor’s Natural Area Preservation Controlled Ecological Burn Season runs from February 20 through May 22, 2020.  Controlled burns may be conducted in Argo, Bird Hills, Hilltop, and Kuebler Langford Nature Areas (across the Huron River from BHV) on weekdays between 11 AM and 7 PM.  For more information phone 734-794-6627 or go online to a2gov.org/NAPBurn.

Only 24 days until Spring!
