DEER MANAGEMENT       Work continues on the BHV Deer Management Plan to complete implementation steps.   More specific information concerning location of activity and time tables will be distributed to all Village residents before commencement of any activity.  While the public comment period for this project ended on January 27, 2020, comments and questions on any subject can always be sent in writing to the Village Clerk’s Office by email to bhvclerk@bartonhillsvillage.org, by fax to 734-222-9177, or by mail/delivery to 199 Barton Shore Drive, Ann Arbor MI 48105.

Please note:  feeding or baiting of deer is illegal in the Lower Peninsula and parts of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan under State law, based on studies provided by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR).  Research indicates that when deer share a common feeding area, they are much more vulnerable to chronic wasting disease, a fatal disease that has been found in deer as close to BHV as Jackson County.

THANK YOU     Sixty five residents and friends attended the Retirement Reception for Chris and Stacie Ward on January 26, 2020.  Guests enjoyed a light buffet and a photo exhibit highlighting Chris’s 29 years on the BHV maintenance crew.  Chris and Stacie extend their thanks for all the kind words, good wishes, and happy memories of their years in BHV.   For those not able to attend the reception, the photo display will remain in Walter Esch Hall through February 10.  Contact Jan at the office for specific daily hours.

PRESIDENTIAL PRIMARY ELECTION     Absentee voter applications are available for the March 10, 2020 Presidential Primary Election.  BHV residents vote at the Ann Arbor Township Office, and application for an AV ballot must be made prior to every election.  For more information contact Ann Arbor Township Clerk Rena Basch (basch@aatwp.org; 734-663-3418) or check online at aatwp.org.  Voter information is also available at michigan.gov/vote.

IN SYMPATHY      Deepest sympathies to the family of long-time resident Robert Kerry, who passed away recently.

FOUND     A gold-colored dangle earring was found near the green recycling bin in the maintenance yard.  Contact Jan at the Village Hall to claim the earring.

RECYCLING REMINDER     BHV recycling requirements are governed by our State of Michigan Stormwater Management permit.  The goal is to minimize the amount of pollutants that flow through stormwater–any precipitation that runs over structures/objects into the waterways.  With that in mind, please…

…do not leave household hazardous waste, such as fertilizers, antifreeze, paint, cleaning/auto products, etc., in the recycling area.  These items are collected at your home by BHV staff on the first Monday trash day of the month, April 1 through November 30 and are taken directly to the Washtenaw County Collection Center because BHV does not have appropriate storage facilities for hazardous waste.  From December-March, residents can call the Center at 734-222-3950 to make arrangements to drop off household hazardous items.

…do not leave household trash in the recycling center.  If you can’t wait until regular trash collection day, contact Supt. Hnatow at 734-368-7896 about a special pick up.  Trash bags left in the area are easy pickings for animals and unpleasant picking-up-after for the staff.

…do separate your recyclables into the appropriate bins.  Glass only in the open bin, plastics/paper materials in the divided green bin, #2 plastics in the wire bins and corrugated cardboard just inside the salt shed doorway.

Thank you for your efforts to keep the recycling area and the planet cleaner and safer!

THINKING SPRING?     While you’re leafing through seed catalogs and dreaming of warmer days, take a look at where the snow is piled up this year, for reference as you consider plantings, lights, sprinklers and other aspects of landscaping.  Such items that are beautiful in the warm weather are invisible under the snow, making it difficult for the snowplow drivers to determine where to drive.  The trucks plow from the road towards your house and the snow has to go somewhere on the way in and at the end—preferably not on top of your landscape features.

Also, the BHV Zoning Ordinance covers all structures including porches, decks, patios and terraces, accessory buildings, fences, walls over 18” tall, lighting and play structures   If you’re planning an outdoor project, please check with Jan at the BHV Clerk’s office about necessary approvals.
