Deer Management in Barton Hills Village

The Trustees and residents of Barton Hills value the quality of life in our Village. The health and well being of all residents is the priority of the Board of Trustees.  To that end, we choose to actively identify and manage related issues.  One of these issues is the growing deer population in the Village.

Since 1989 deer population has been an accepted concern for the Village residents. Today that concern remains equally, if not more important, since deer management was abandoned in 2007.  With a visibly growing deer population, known diseases, health risks and damage associated with deer, the Trustees have identified the need for a formal Deer Management Plan.

In August 2019, the Environmental Committee was assigned the project and immediately began its research to develop the plan and make recommendations to the Board of Trustees.  The goal is to achieve short-term and long-term deer population management in order to preserve and protect our values and the health of our residents.  The research began by contacting the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR), similar communities, and two professional contractors to help guide the committee.

After lengthy research, presentations to the Trustees during board meetings, and application to the DNR, we have developed a formal Deer Management Plan and the DNR has issued approval to harvest up to 50 deer in the Village.

The Board has approved the Deer Management Plan, which includes harvesting deer, and we are now contracting with a qualified and known local Michigan animal control specialist, Aaron’s Nuisance Animal Control.  The harvesting efforts are expected to begin in late January or early February.  More specific information concerning location of activity and time tables will be distributed to all Village residents before commencement of any activity.

Please note that there will be no harvesting on private property, unless a resident specifically volunteers and consents to such efforts, and abutting neighbors also agree.

If you have any questions or comments, please send these in writing to the Village Clerk’s Office by email to bhvclerk@bartonhillsvillage.org, by fax to 734-222-9177, or by mail/delivery to 199 Barton Shore Drive, Ann Arbor MI 48105.  Comments must be received by 9 AM on Monday January 27, 2020.  The Deer Management Plan is available on request from the Clerk’s Office (email, in person, or phone request to 734-222-5209).
