2020 COMMUNITY CALENDAR     Attached to this Bulletin is the “Discover the Wildlife of the Watershed” calendar provided by the Huron River Watershed Council and its community partners.  Along with the beautiful photographs of various watershed locations, there is a wealth of information about how BHV residents can make a positive difference in protecting water resources.  Barton Hills Village is a member of the Huron River Watershed Council and an active participant in the Middle Huron Partnership, working with other communities to reduce pollution and promote positive conservation activities.  Take a look and start today to discover, connect with and protect the wonders of the Huron River Watershed.  Additional copies of the calendar are available from the BHV Clerk’s Office.

HALLOWEEN EVENT
The Halloween Trolley Ride and Pizza Party was quite the event on October 31, 2019!  Between cold, wet weather, late pizza and a trolley encounter with mud it was not the usual carefree adventure, but 37 kids plus accompanying adults had a great time anyway.  Many thanks to Sonnet Meek for coordinating the ride sign up and stops lists, to the residents who participated with Trolley stops, to the BHV Staff for their safety escort, and to the Recreation Committee for their efforts in providing a Halloween night to remember.

FALL CLEAN UP     Despite the early taste of winter weather, BHV staff will be working on fall cleanup.  They can vacuum up wet leaves as long as there is no snow in the piles (that freezes in the hose), and will do so for homeowners who rake their own leaves.  Lawn service providers are expected to haul away whatever debris they gather.  Please do not bag leaves for pick up.  Separate out sticks, rocks and brush that clog up the leaf vacuum and leave them in a separate pile from the leaves near (but not in) the driveway or roadway where the staff can pick them up as time permits.  Consider mulching leaves to provide nutrients for the lawn, and removing leaves from catch basins.  Leaf pick up will not occur on trash collection days.

SPEAKING OF SNOW…     Please contact Jan at the Clerk’s office if you will be having a private service plowing your driveway this winter.  This information is essential to the BHV staff in planning safe and effective snow removal.  Residents are reminded not to place landscape items such as plants, rocks or light fixtures within 2-3 feet of the driveway edges where the snow and/or the plows will damage them.

Residents are also encouraged to use environmentally friendly de-icing products to minimize salt run off.  Increased levels of salt and other de-icers are harmful to vegetation and aquatic life, especially as they run through storm drains and ditches into the river.  Use as little as needed to get the job done, and remove visible de-icer from dry pavement that is no longer working and will be washed away.  Avoid de-icers all together by shoveling early and often, which is healthier for both the environment and the shoveler.
