SECURITY UPDATE     The Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Department reports two recent incidents of vandals breaking into unoccupied/for sale homes and removing large appliances, HVAC units, etc.  One incident was in BHV on Whitmore Lake Road, the other in the Plymouth/Dixboro Road area.  The BHV crew also reports finding random pieces of mail on the ground a short distance from the intended mailbox.  While investigation continues and security patrols have been increased, BHV residents are also advised to use reasonable precautions to protect their homes and property.  Suggestions include:
–Install and always set a home alarm system                    –Use motion sensor outdoor lights          –Set timers on indoor lights and change patterns often      –Shield windows near doors
–Lock doors and windows;  install deadbolts on doors      –Prune shrubs             –Know your neighbors and keep an eye on neighborhood activities
–Don’t let mail pile up in the box or packages linger by the door          –Sign up for the US Postal Service Informed Delivery option to keep tabs on expected mail
If you need help or have significant concerns, call 911 first.  BHV Supt. Jeff Hnatow can be reached at 734-368-7896 or phone the BHV office 734-222-5209 for other contact numbers.

TREES AND SAFETY     BHV is working to ensure that the roadways are safe from hazardous trees and have adequate sightlines at intersections and driveways.  Supt. Jeff Hnatow invites residents to contact him (734-368-7896 cell, bhvclerk@bartonhillsvillage.org, 734-222-5209 office) if they have concerns about trees on their property or at other locations in BHV.

FALL LEAVES     Please note the following:
–If you rake your own leaves, you can pile them near (but not in) the road or driveway for BHV collection with their vacuum truck.  Don’t bag the leaves.
–Lawn services/hired providers must haul leaves away as part of their service.
–Mulching leaves during mowing adds nutrients to the soil.
–Leaf pick up will not be on trash pick up days since the same truck is used for both.
–Sort out sticks, rocks and debris that will clog/damage the leaf vacuum.  These can be put in piles for separate pick up.

SNOW PLOWING
It’s not too soon to think about snow plowing.
–Plowing with two trucks and available crew takes at least 8 hours to clear a 3-4” snow and 12 or more hours for a heavier snow.
–The roads are the first priority and will be cleared as much as possible during a snowfall.  Achieving totally clear pavement throughout the village may take a number of days.  Hills, curves and intersections are given the most attention.
–Driveways are plowed when 3 inches of snow have fallen, beginning with the steepest ones.  Those with flatter driveways can usually get out until the plow truck arrives.
–The snow has to go somewhere.  The trucks plow in from the road and have to work around vehicles, bushes, lights and other obstacles.  Pushing snow into the roadway is illegal statewide.
–Driveway plowing is a service offered by BHV, but it does come with limitations.  Residents are always free to make other arrangements with private snow plowing providers to better suit their needs.  Please let Supt. Hnatow know if a private service will be plowing so he can efficiently schedule the BHV crew.
