NEIGHBORHOOD CONVERSATION WITH MDOT
M-14 / Barton Drive Interchange PEL Study
Thursday, September 29, 2022 6:00 PM
Walter Esch Hall, 199 Barton Shore Drive
The Michigan Department of Transportation is conducting a PEL* study of the M-14/Barton Drive interchange to evaluate environmental and traffic safety issues and possible improvements for future work. The study area extends along eastbound M-14 from just west of the Main Street ramps to just east of the Pontiac Trail bridge. Options being considered by MDOT include leaving the ramps as-is, closing the eastbound Barton Drive ramp, extending and widening the eastbound ramp, and redesigning/rebuilding the ramps. *Planning and Environmental Linkages
On September 12th, the Trustees approved the following position for Barton Hills Village.
- Oppose closing the M-14 Barton Drive ramps. Oppose MDOT doing nothing to improve the safety of the ramps.
- Support MDOT implementing short-term recommendations from its 2021 “M-14 from US-23 BR to Barton Drive, Ann Arbor Township, Washtenaw County Road Safety Audit.”
- Support MDOT’s 2022 PEL study intended to evaluate the environmental and traffic safety issues and possible improvements for future work on M-14 at Barton Drive and Main Street.
MDOT’s PEL study of this area will:
- Consider environmental, community, and economic goals early in the transportation planning process.
- Use the information analysis and services or recommendations developed during planning to inform the environmental review process, and
- Evaluate the condition, geometric/safety, and operational needs of the Barton Drive ramps.
MDOT representatives at the September 29th neighborhood conversation include Project Manager Mike Davis, along with colleagues Monica Monsma (public involvement) and Jeff Bagdade (consultant team project manager). Trustee Carla Smith, BHV’s representative to MDOT’s Local Advisory Committee, will facilitate the conversation. Mike, Monica, and Jeff will briefly review content from the most-recent Committee meeting, show a YouTube presentation video, and answer residents’ questions.
It is vital that Barton Hills Village residents understand and provide feedback on this project, as this access point is essential to our community. If you’d like a copy of Trustee Smith’s September 12th presentation or a copy of MDOT’s 2021 Road Safety Audit, please contact Jan Esch. If you’re unable to join this neighborhood conversation, you have until September 28th to share your input with MDOT via this link: https://www.m14-bartonpel.com/
