SECURITY Contact the Village office (734-222-5209; bhvclerk@bartonhillsvillage.org) or Supt. Joe Hnatow (734-263-9378) if you will be away for the holidays and need the BHV Security patrol to keep an extra watch on your house. As Barton Hills Village does not have a police department, please call 911 in the event of a serious emergency.
HOLIDAY RECYCLING
- Boxboard (gift boxes) can be put in the green bin, but corrugated cardboard goes inside the salt shed.
- Giftwrap is recyclable if it is not metallic, but tissue paper, bubble wrap, Styrofoam, and plastic bags are not recyclable.
- Containers need to be empty and rinsed out with no food or liquid residue.
- Christmas trees can be placed near the road for pickup.

Get-togethers
Holidays often involve get-togethers. Eco-tips: Consider low-impact gatherings like walking/hiking/looking for wildlife (very easy in BHV) and choose locations where carpooling or central locations can reduce travel footprints. Where possible, consider using compostable tableware and try to avoid single-use plastic (real dishes also work!).
Gifts
Many of you are trying to find unique gifts for family and friends. Eco-Tips: There are great local stores that offer sustainable products that might be of interest (see list of eco-friendly businesses). Ann Arbor also has a great selection of second-hand stores selling items, wrapping materials and craft materials. Why not give “experiences” such as theater tickets, game tickets, etc? Wrapping gifts can also take on a creative approach where scarves, reused bags, etc. can reduce paper waste.
Lighting
Many of us love to see homes with festive lights in this season. It is a nice break since our days are so short. Wildlife still benefits from “the natural night environment” (https://sites.lsa.umich.edu/darkskies/ ). Eco-Tips: Consider your electrical usage and incorporate LED lights as much as possible. Try to turn off your lights after a certain time each evening. Consider motion sensor lighting as a strategy to balance safety/security with helping out our animal friends.
