RECYCLING UPDATE

RULE NUMBER ONE     All items must be clean and dry!

–No peanut butter at the bottom of the jar, no swallow of liquid left in the bottle, no cheese stuck to the pizza box.  The smallest amount of food can contaminate the whole bin.
–Rinse/dry containers and remove bottle lids.

RULE NUMBER TWO
     A place for everything.
–Green bin:  mixed containers in one half, mixed paper in the other, as printed on the side of the bin (no more separate bin for glass).
–There are two exceptions (don’t put these things in the green bin even if it says you can):
Exception 1: large #2 plastics like milk, water and laundry jugs go in the mesh bins.
Clean, with caps removed (throw caps in the trash can)
Exception 2: corrugated cardboard goes just inside the salt shed open doorway.
Empty out boxes (recycle or throw away packing materials)

RULE NUMBER THREE     Plastic grocery and trash bags are not recyclable in BHV.
–Throw plastic bags in the trash can by the green bin, or take them to a grocery store that has a recycling option.  Don’t put them in the green bin—they clog the sorting machine.

RULE NUMBER FOUR     A few things can be picked up at your house.
–Household hazardous waste items can be put next to your trash can on the first Monday of the month beginning April 5, 2021.  See the list below.
–Corrugated cardboard boxes can be put next to your trash can on any regular trash collection day.  They don’t need to be broken down, but they do need to be clean and empty with no trash.
–Household trash is picked up at your house on the first, third and fifth Mondays and taken directly to the landfill.  Don’t leave household trash in the recycling area where it will get stinky and attract critters/bugs.

RULE
NUMBER FIVE    Enough rules.  Thanks for recycling!

Medications:  Check out DontFlushDrugs.com or your local pharmacy for proper medication disposal information.  Don’t dump medicine down the drain/toilet or put it in the trash.

Consult the recycling guide at www.washtenaw.org/281/Turning-Trash-Into-Treasure.

Watch for notices in the Barton Bulletin about Washtenaw County Clean Up Days.

FINAL WORDS     Drive carefully in the recycling/garage area.  When in doubt, ask.  Do your part to keep the area neat and clean.  Thanks for reading all the way to the end 😊
