WATER METER READING     BHV staff are reading water meters inside each home for the annual billing.  If you prefer to not schedule a visit from the maintenance crew, you can take a photo of the dial numbers on your meter and email it to bhvclerk@bartonhillsvillage.org.  Be sure to put your name/address in the email.  If you will be going away, or have a particular time span that’s best for the staff to come (i.e. come after 5 PM or on a Thursday), let us know that too. Thanks!

FINAL HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTE COLLECTION    BHV collects household hazardous waste (fertilizer, cleaning products, paint, etc.) on the first Monday trash collection day of each month, April – November, and takes these items directly to the Washtenaw County Home Toxins Collection Center.  Now that November is here, BHV can no longer collect HHW.

Items put out with the trash will not be picked up.  Do not bring HHW down to the maintenance area, as there is no safe place to store the items.  Residents can contact the Washtenaw County Home Toxins Center (located at 705 N. Zeeb Road (just north of I-94 Zeeb Road exit), Ann Arbor 48103) at 734-222-3950 to arrange to take items directly there themselves.

There is a list of acceptable/unacceptable items on the County website at ewashtenaw.org (How Do I? >> Dispose >>Home Toxics).

HURON RIVER WATERSHED COUNCIL 2022 CALENDARS     The focus for the 2022 calendar is Discover the Power of Plants.  Learn more about the Huron River watershed while enjoying awesome photos of nature close-up. There is also helpful information about native plants that can create lovely landscapes while supporting the health of environmental resources.  The beautiful and interesting calendars will be distributed directly to residents this week, so keep an eye out for them.

FALL CLEAN UP     It’s that time of year!  BHV staff are now working on fall cleanup.  They can vacuum up wet leaves as long as there is no snow in the piles (that freezes in the hose) and will do so for homeowners who rake their own leaves.

  • Lawn service providers are expected to haul away whatever debris they gather.
  • Please do not bag leaves for pick up.
  • Separate out sticks, rocks and brush that clog up the leaf vacuum and leave them in separate piles (sticks and brush separate) from the leaves near (but not in) the driveway or roadway where the staff can pick them up as time permits.
  • Consider mulching leaves to provide nutrients for the lawn.
  • Remove leaves from catch basins to keep water off the roadways.
  • Leaf pick-up will not occur on trash collection days.

SNOW PLOWING     Please contact the Village office if you will be having a private service plowing your driveway this winter.  This information is essential to the BHV staff in planning safe and effective snow removal.  Residents are reminded not to place landscape items such as plants, rocks or light fixtures along the driveway edges where the snow and/or the plows will damage them.

Snow is not plowed until it reaches 2 ½  – 3 inches in depth.  Roadways and steep areas are tended to as needed to maintain safety.

Residents are also encouraged to use environmentally friendly de-icing products to minimize salt run off.  Increased levels of salt and other de-icers is harmful to vegetation and aquatic life, especially as it runs through storm drains and ditches into the river.  Use as little as needed to get the job done, and remove visible de-icer from dry pavement that is no longer working and will be washed away.  Avoid de-icers all together by shoveling early and often, which is healthier for both the environment and the shoveler.

RECYCLE REMINDER    Please (!!)  Keep cardboard dry until it can be picked up on regular trash days.  Rain and snow may sneak up on boxes left outside overnight, and even the early morning dampness can make a mess.  If you bring cardboard down to the recycle area, put it just inside the salt shed, under cover from the wetness.  Thank you!

Remember to “fall back” with the time change this weekend!
