OAK WILT Help to stop the spread of this devasting disease.
What is oak wilt? Oak wilt is a fungal disease that affects oak trees. As the name implies, oak wilt causes leaves of affected trees to wilt and turn brown. It is fatal for red oaks, including northern red oak, pin oak, scarlet oak and black oak. White oaks are affected but may survive. The incidence of oak wilt has greatly increased in Michigan in recent years.
How is oak wilt spread? Oak wilt is spread from infected to healthy trees in two ways:
1. Through root systems from adjacent infected trees.
2. By certain kinds of beetles, which carry spores between infected trees, logs or even firewood, and fresh wounds (such as pruning cuts) on unaffected trees. The activities of people, such as pruning during vulnerable times, or moving infected firewood, can cause new infections.
How do I know what kind of oak trees I have? Oak trees in Michigan can be divided into two main groups: red oaks and white oaks. Generally, red oaks have pointed leaf lobes and white oaks have rounded leaf lobes. The red oak group is more susceptible to oak wilt.
What are signs of oak wilt? Symptoms most often appear from late June through September. Affected trees will suddenly begin to wilt from the top down, rapidly dropping leaves, which can be green, brown or a combination of both colors.
What is the treatment for oak wilt? Once an oak tree is infected with the oak wilt fungus, the tree will die and there is no treatment to save the tree. When an oak wilt infection is confirmed, treatment can be applied to the surrounding trees to prevent the spread of the disease.
How can I protect my oak trees? Oak trees are most vulnerable in the spring when beetles that carry the fungus spores are active. The fungus can infect the trees through wounds left by pruning or storm damage. If the tree is damaged, immediately cover the area with treewound paint or latex-based paint. Wait until November to trim or cut oak trees.
What do I do if I suspect oak wilt:
–Report infections at Michigan.gov/ForestHealth using an interactive map.
–Contact a local DNR forest health specialist for more information at DNR-FRD-ForestHealth@Michigan.gov or 517-284-5866.
–Seek verification from Michigan State University canr.msu.edu/pestid or call 517-355-4536.
–Get help from an oak-wilt qualified specialist. Visit MichiganOakWilt.org for a listing and
more information.
